Making The Smart Choice With Multi-Platform

When Alpha Heating Innovation tasked us with agreeing a series in Professional Heating and Plumbing Installer (PHPI) magazine that would incorporate key messaging relating to its FlowSmart solution, we recognised the benefits of taking this series much further than just print.

Looking at it from a multi-platform perspective, we looked to create an idea that would span social and web too. The ‘Be Smart with Alpha’ online quiz was then created.

Launched on 6th January, ‘Be Smart with Alpha’ is an online quiz to find the UK's 'smartest' plumber. Asking general knowledge questions, participants have just two minutes to answer as many questions correctly. Those in the top three places when the competition ends on 30th April win prizes.

The print element of the series sees a write-up in the magazine about the quiz with a sign off as to why Alpha’s FlowSmart is the ‘smart’ choice. This allows Alpha to increase awareness of not just the brand but also the FlowSmart solution, with the quiz a great way to keep readers’ interest. With an initial announcement in the December issue, write-ups have also been included in every issue since and will continue until April; a special winners announcement will also be included in the June issue.

From an on-line perspective, the nature of this series has made the incorporation simple, as the competition itself is being hosted on the magazine’s website. A leaders board is also hosted here and is regularly updated so entrants can see if they are in with a chance of winning one of the three great prizes; this encourages further traffic to the site even after people have taken part, where again key messaging relating to FlowSmart is included.

Social is also playing a key element of ‘Be Smart with Alpha’ and this quiz has really enabled further promotion of Alpha’s Facebook page while encouraging more ‘likes’. Those that visit Alpha’s page have an extra chance to win a prize by getting involved in the Question of the Week where small prizes are up for grabs. The main quiz is also promoted via Alpha and PHPI’s Facebook and Twitter feeds. With social providing a valuable resource in which to get people talking about this quiz, we have seen a significant uplift in the interaction, particularly on Facebook.

‘Be Smart with Alpha’ is a great example of how a series can be broadened to be multi-channel for our clients. With web and social being so accessible now through the use of smart phones, it should a natural consideration.
